Best Clipper Blades for
Poodle Grooming

Poodles have a dense, curly, single-layer coat that grows continuously and does not shed. This makes regular professional grooming essential — without clipping every 4-6 weeks, the coat mats severely. The tight curls can be clipped into a variety of styles from the classic "Continental" show cut to the practical "Puppy" or "Lamb" clip.

Poodle Grooming Tips

1

Always bathe and fully dry the coat before clipping — wet or damp poodle hair dulls blades rapidly and causes uneven cuts.

2

Use a #10 blade for clean face, feet, and tail base. This is the foundation of every standard poodle clip.

3

For pet owners who want a low-maintenance look, the #5F body clip (6.3mm) gives a soft, even finish that lasts 4-6 weeks.

4

Change blades frequently during long grooming sessions. Poodle coats are dense and generate heat — switch to a cool blade every 10-15 minutes.

5

Ceramic blades stay 75% cooler than steel, making them ideal for poodle grooming where clipper burn is a common concern.

Poodle Grooming Blade FAQ

What blade size should I use for a poodle puppy cut?
A #5F blade (6.3mm) is the most popular choice for a poodle puppy/lamb clip. It leaves a soft, even coat length across the body. For a slightly longer "teddy bear" look, use a #4F (9.5mm). Always use a #10 on the face, feet, and tail base for the classic clean look.
How often should poodle clipper blades be replaced?
With regular sharpening, professional-quality A5 blades last 6-12 months of heavy use. SUMTHIN MIM powder metallurgy blades (HRC 60-62) hold their edge significantly longer than standard stamped blades. For high-volume grooming shops, we recommend having 2-3 sets in rotation.
Do I need different blades for Standard, Miniature, and Toy Poodles?
The same blade sizes work for all poodle sizes — the blade number system is universal. However, smaller poodles (Miniature and Toy) require more careful handling as there is less margin for error on faces and feet. A #30 blade gives a closer face/feet clip for show prep.
